Raising Confident Kids Through Daily Interactions | Drama Kids International

We all want to help our children be more confident about themselves and have a higher self-esteem, but how are parents really able to make that happen? While it might sound like a lofty goal, there are ways we can reframe our daily interactions with our children to be confidence boosters that we may not have even realized!

Children are so quick to internalize both positive and negative interactions with adults, and remembering this in every interaction with them can help you frame everything in a confidence-boosting light.

Here are some ways to do so:

How to Frame Your Interactions to Boost Kids’ Confidence

Give realistic praise. Not every kid is going to be talented at every activity, and that is completely OK. Instead of being confused about how to respond or over-praising an effort your kids might not be proud of, let your praise meet them where they are. Praise them for trying something new, learning a new skill and give them the ever-important reminder that no one is good at everything instead of enthusiastically gushing over a less-than-ideal attempt.

Let them help you. Kids look to their parents both for validation and independence, especially as they get older. As it is age-appropriate, encourage both of these things simultaneously by letting them help you and praising them excitedly when they do. From finding things in a grocery store to helping with light yard work, there are plenty of opportunities to make your children feel included and valued.

Model good self-love behaviors. Children absorb so much of what they see in their parents, which is why modeling good behaviors for confidence and self-love can go such a long way. Practicing only positive self-talk and self-esteem behaviors in the presence of your children will let them see first-hand what having confidence can do.

Encourage confidence-building activities. Giving children the opportunity to succeed at something they enjoy is one of the best ways to boost their confidence. Activities such as drama classes are a great catalyst for boosting self-esteem and having tons of fun.
