How to Keep Tweens Busy and Happy at Home | Drama Kids

Hearing “I’m bored” from children of any age can be a scary thing for a parent, but if your child is in the tween age range, it can feel absolutely impossible to think of something that will keep them content.

However, there is no need to worry! There are plenty of activities that can keep tweens busy and engaged, some of which you can do as a whole family.

Check out our top ideas below, and be sure to share your own ideas with us as well!

Keeping Your Tweenagers Happy at Home

Do STEM and science experiments. While there are STEM and science activities appropriate for any age, the tween years are a great opportunity to get creative and do something more complex with your kiddos. Tweens can delve further into science experiments, real-world algebra applications and even computer programming skills that can keep them busy for hours.

Have a baking or cooking competition. Cooking with your children is a great way to bond, and for older kids, adding a competitive flair can make things even more exciting. Setting up a bake-off or a reality TV-style cooking competition is something the whole family can get involved in and have a blast with.

Try a new board game. As children get older and their attention spans get longer, you can start introducing new and more complex board games into family game night. Picking a new board game you can all learn together is a great way to puzzle something out and learn a new skill together as you go over the instructions and figure out exactly how it’s done.

Inspire curiosity as a family. Tweens are full of curiosity, and they tend to have a knack for asking questions that parents do not know the answer to. To inspire curiosity as a family, think of something your tween has been particularly interested in lately and make it a mission to learn more about it. Maybe he or she has been curious about what gives elephants such great memory skills, so you can find a documentary on elephants to watch for your next movie night. Or you could go all out and set up a quiz-style game on a specific topic so you can all test your knowledge!
