Helping Your Kids Stay Healthy Over the Holidays
The holiday season is here, and our Drama Kids team knows that one of the greatest gifts you could give and receive is keeping your child healthy and safe! Since it can be difficult to keep everyone in your home healthy, we decided to do some homework and have found a number of ideas that will help you succeed on your mission.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a great resource for holiday health and safety tips and while some of them may seem like common knowledge, it’s always nice to have a refresher course!
1. Wash those hands and wash them often! School may be out over the holidays, but that doesn’t mean your child is safe from whatever germs could be hanging around. The holiday season is chock-full of fun visits with friends and family, and you guessed it, not-so-fun visits with germs. Now is a great time to remind your child to regularly wash his or her hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds.
2. Dress appropriately. If you live in a colder climate this is especially important, because it’s time to play in the snow! Layer your kids up, and no, not as much as Ralphie’s brother in “A Christmas Story,” but enough to where they will stay warm and dry. Getting wet in the cold does nothing to help them stay healthy.
3. Don’t overdo it on the holiday treats. We know, those holiday goodies are especially tasty and we’re not saying don’t let you kids enjoy them, but we are suggesting find some ways to sneak in healthy alternatives. Check out these great ideas about how to disguise some healthy treats.
4. Stay active. Don’t just let your little ones sit around playing on their phone or video game system all holiday break! Instead, why not take a family trip to a skating rink or participate in a holiday-themed fun run?
Remember, keeping your child healthy for the holidays also means watching out for hazards such as fire, cars, choking and poisoning. Candles, decorations and toys are all common things that could be potentially dangerous around the holidays.
We hope that you all have a wonderful holiday season and are able to make fantastic memories with family and friends. If you’re looking for a way to help keep your child’s mind active and engaged during the holiday break, contact your local Drama Kids to find out what holiday camps might be running!
