Family-friendly Activities for the Winter | Drama Kids International

In a little over two weeks, it will officially be winter, and for many families throughout the United States, that means the doldrums of winter are almost here.

But don’t worry—just because the weather is getting colder doesn’t mean your children will be left bored to tears inside the house!

We have compiled a list of excellent ideas that will help them stay active and save you from hearing “I’m bored” repeated over and over again throughout the winter months.

Bringing the Fun Indoors

These indoor activities are a guaranteed-fun time, whether you live in the snowy, frozen north or warmer, rainy southern regions.

Get ready to embrace your child’s crafty and creative side with these ideas:

1. Make Q-Tip snowflakes. You can leave the real stuff outside with this craft! For this craft, you’ll need a white poster board, blue and white paint, silver glitter, scissors, a paintbrush or cotton ball, cotton swabs (Q-Tips), and glue. Your child can paint the poster board blue and then you can add the silver glitter before it dries. Next, put glue on one side of a cotton swab and have your child place it on the poster board. Repeat this step four more times with the swabs overlapping in the center to make a snowflake shape.

2. Put on a family play or make a music video. You already know that we absolutely love all things drama and theatre-related, so it only makes sense that we would suggest gathering the family and coming up with a fun, short play. Is your child still loving the “Baby Shark” song? The family could always work together to make a fun music video to share with family and friends.

3. Make greeting cards for residents of a local nursing home. This activity can be as simple as stamping designs on cut-out pieces of colored construction paper, or can be taken a step further creativity-wise with a cute pop-out card creation. No matter which route your family chooses, the cards will be appreciated by the seniors in the nursing home. And the activity serves as a moment to teach your child about community service and caring for others.

4. Encourage reading with a trip to the library. Reading is an excellent way for your child to improve a number of important skills and can also have benefits for you as well! Initiate family story time and take turns reading to each other. Reading to your child can help boost his or her literacy rate, increase vocabulary and provides excellent quality time opportunities.

With these ideas in mind, there’s no need to let the season change turn to boredom in your home! Drama Kids International is here to help provide even more entertaining and learning opportunities for children through our drama programs that can be found throughout the country.
